The winter double trap league is about to start our club. The only shotgun I own is a Remington 870. I have been encouraged by some and discouraged by others to shoot doubles with an 870. Having never shot doubles before, I would like your opinion. Wayne

All, Hittman and I spent some quality time with his Superior Arms AR-15 and the 1911's in Iowa this weekend. I haven't had the opportunity to run any quantity of ammo through his AR yet, so this weekend we each ran about 50 rounds each through through it over the course of a couple hours. I have to say that it's really a fun gun to shoot. With the stock iron sights we both could hold 4" groups at 25 yards while standing. Not great, but considering the wind, old eyes, and shooting from the standing position, I'd say pretty good. I really liked the six position stock, which made pull length perfect for each of us, me having the shorter arms and requiring one click shorter pull. Recoil, of course, from a .223 is nill, but the muzzle blast is a tad on the loud side with an 18" barrel! With plugs and muffs, you could shoot this at prairie dogs all day and hopefully someday we will. We shot 400 rounds of 45ACP through the 1911's before we lost the sun. Hittman made some sweet 6-10" gong targets for IDPA & USPSA practice. I gotta tell you it was a fun filled time at the range. Wayne

I shot 100 bullets this weekend that I hardened a week ago and found much success! These are the same Lee 452-228-1R that I was having so many problems with earlier in this thread. The only variable that I changed is I heated at 400F for 1hr and water quenched, everything else remained the same. It was 8 days between casting and shooting, so they had plenty of time to harden. The leading isn't completely gone, but it is MUCH less than it was with the unhardened wheel weight lead. As a matter of fact, I shot the whole 100 through my 1911 and checked for leading about every 10 shots. Normally I would stop at about 50 fired because the leading was causing flyers, certainly not the case this time. I think I'll try hardening just a bit more and see what that yields. Wayne

From American Rifleman: "During the recent NRA Annual Meetings, Americanrifleman.org/Americanhunter.org learned that Knight Rifles is closing its doors after 24 years as a key American firearms manufacturer. That news was confirmed late last week via an announcement from Modern Muzzleloading, Inc., a related subsidiary under corporate parent, Pradco Outdoor Brands/EBSCO. The press release stated, “The decision to close the Knight operation resulted from an overall industry downturn.” Reportedly Knight sales had declined sharply in recent years and efforts to sell the brand and company assets were unsuccessful." I was in Iowa a couple months ago and listened to a radio interview with the guy that started Knight. He was no longer in ownership of the company, and hadn't been for years. He was very careful what he said about the shutdown, as to not disparage the current owners/employees. Wayne

I think this is a hardness vs velocity problem. The WW lead with no tempering has a BH of 9-10. The faster I load them the worst the leading gets. When I cut the Clays back to 3.7, the loading almost goes away. I've heat treated some to a BH of 15 and will load them with the same load that was leading pretty bad. I'll let you know what I find.
