  1. All, This is a blown barrel from a 1911A1 45ACP. The shooter had a squib and didn't realize what had happened. He just figured that the cartridge didn't fire and racked the slide again. He did see the case land on the ledge in the indoor range, but it was so dark he couldn't see that the case was empty. Pulled the trigger and you see the results.
  2. In Illinois we are just starting to see an increase in availability. However, it's still hit or miss whether you can find them. It is better than six months ago when there were simply none to be found anywhere around here. How is it in your area?
  3. I just looked at my foam plugs for the db rating and found that they are 31db. My muffs are almost the same rating, but I swear the muffs do better at protecting my ears. Mostly because my ears will ring after shooting several rounds of trap with foam plugs, while if I wear the muffs my ears don't ring... The muzzle blast from the shooter standing at next station(s) also seems quieter with the muffs. Wayne
  4. When I first started casting and shooting lead bullets, I asked a friend of mine (experienced shooter) what is the best way to clean leading from my barrel? He said to get an awl or dental pick and scrape the leading out. Folks, experience is the best teacher. DO NOT put anything made of carbon steel into your barrel to clean the lead out! I learned the hard way and scratched a .45 1911 barrel. This method works like a champ! Wayne
  5. I shoot cast bullets in my pistols and usually get mild leading, which needs to be cleaned from the barrel. After much experimentation I have found a simple and very effective way to clean lead from the bore. Simply spray penetrating oil/fluid (I use Royal Purple syn) in the bore and let site over night. Then next day simply clamp the barrel in your non-marring vise and run a jag of bronze wool through the barrel a few times. Why bronze wool? Because it's much softer than barrel steel, even stainless. The worst leading I've seen will wipe out in no time. Wayne
  6. Believe it or not, but I find there are times (1 out of 100) that I don't pull the trigger hard enough to fire the shotgun and end up trying to chase the target (which doesn't work). I have shot several other member's shotguns that have much lighter triggers. When shooting the lighter trigger shotguns, it's a very positive feel - I never have to think "make sure you pull the trigger hard enough". I'll be the pull on my stock 870 is 10-12 pounds. Wayne
  7. Crashbox, You said you bought a Lock-n-Load AP, have you used it yet? I have a Lee Loadmaster that I haven't been real happy with because of the primer feed system. Considering a L&L AP - looking for feedback on the primer system. Wayne
  8. That was a great deal on the workbench! What type of press - progressive or single station? I both a progressive and a single station for metallic and a single station for shotgun. I simply screw the shotgun into the benchtop, so I can move it out of the way when not in use. The single station metallic press is bolted to a 3' long 2x4 that is then screwed into the benchtop, again movable which I really like. The I found that the progressive had to be very still, or the primer mechanism would tend to turn and smash primers. I mounted it to a 3'x8"x1/2" plate of steel. The plate steel is then screwed to the benchtop, which again makes it movable. The progressive mounted to the plate steel is heavy, so I don't move it often. I like having movable presses, but don't want many sets of holes drilled into my work bench. Mount your presses to metal or a wood plank and get the best of both worlds! Wayne Lee Breech Lock Lee Load master
  9. I believe there is a law in Illinois that you may not own a gun with a suppressor. Is it possible that with proper paperwork/permits that one may be able to obtain/own a suppressed firearm in IL? Wayne
  10. I currently use fairly bulky Browning muffs, that work very well. Previously I was using simply foam ear plugs, but my ears would ring every time to left the trap club. I have problems with the muffs interfering with my gun mount, so am looking for slim muffs or enhanced plugs. I would prefer electronic muffs/plugs so that I can hear what others are saying. I would like to know what others use and if you are happy with their function. Wayne
  11. I have used Clays and find it to be very extremely clean. I've talked to many who swear by 700-x and wouldn't use Clays if you gave it to them. I've never loaded 700-x and wonder how it compares to Clays? Cheaper? As Clean? Breaks targets before you pull the trigger? :-) Wayne
  12. Was there a common root cause for the kaboom in the Glocks?
  13. Is it hard to get the cartridges in and out of the moon clips?
  14. A picture is worth a thousand words! Thanks Bill! Wayne
  15. I know that the official stance from Glock is that they do not recommend shooting cast bullets in their guns. Does anyone have real experience shooting cast bullets in a Glock or similar gun? Does the polygonal rifling build lead faster? Wayne
  16. Woodsoup, Are you getting lot's of rain? Any flooding problems? Wayne

    NFA forum

DNewton, I believe I speak for many people who might read these forums. I'm completely unfamiliar with NFA and acronyms like "MG", "SRB", and "suppressor". Could you put a short FAQ together that we could sticky? Thanks, Wayne
  18. Am I correct in my assumption that a suppressor is the same as a silencer? Wayne
  19. I'm a bit confused about the need for moon clips, do you HAVE to always use moon clips because the 45 ACP is rimless? Or, does the moon clip just make extraction faster? Wayne
  20. I found this web page that describes the Kel Tec sub-2000. I love this description of the trigger: "The trigger is atrocious. Sloppy, stupid long pull, breaks at around 500 pounds." Wayne
