  1. Just wanted to know what other people are paying for primers. I use WW in the 12, 20 & 28. I use Remington primers in the .410. I pay $160 for 5k Winchesters and $170 for the Remingtons.
  2. I wouldn't worry about it. I would think that wad pressure and powder charge has much more to with actual chamber pressure than the crimp. You should see some of my early 28ga Winchester HS hulls. I tried to use Universal Clays in that hull with little success. Changed to Longshot and problems went away. With that said, the ugliest crimps that had to be left in the box to keep the shot from falling out broke the targets just fine.

    S&W 1911 range report

I really didn't want to get into the bashing of S&W, but I have to tell you I was pretty upset about the 442. By the time I got to the store I bought it from, I was somewhat calmed down by then. I waited an extra 6 months to get that gun because I didn't want one with an internal lock. I wanted something small and light which could be easily concealed even with summer clothing. I am rethinking my choice now......... we will see.
  4. Never done that, but I do have a good idea. When my MEC presses would start not feeding primers from the tray consistantly, I took a dryer antistatic sheet(BOUNCE) and wiped down the plastic tray. End of problem. Try emptying your powder measure hopper and wipe it out with the dryer sheet. I would bet it works.
  5. Rubber grips feel good, but they cause problems with concealed carry. Your outerware like a jacket or shirt has a tendency to grip the rubber and start riding it up until the weapon is exposed if used with a belt style holster. If it feels good, go for it. If you carry it, be aware that this can happen.
  6. Well, I can only report that I was able to fire 4 rounds through my new 442 before it quit firing. It would not fire the 5th shot!!! Upon further inspection, the firing pin bushing was pushed back so far that it would not allow the firing pin with enough protrusion to ignite the primer. It went back so far that it didn't even dent the primer on subsequent trigger pulls. I have NEVER seen this happen before. I am really glad I decided to test it before depending on it! The ammo was Federal 158gr LSWCHP+P. This is new manufactured stuff that I just bought 2 weeks ago. I am not blaming the ammo in any way. I bought this stuff to get a feel for the gun before I started using the carry ammo I bought which is $1 a round. It's going back to S&W tomorrow.
  7. After 2 trips back to S&W for various problems, I found some time to go to the range and put some lead down the barrel. It's a 1911 S&W, 108284. Full size, SS, adjustable rear sight and ambi safety. The trips back to S&W was for FTF and a defective rear sight. All done under warranty and done in a timely fashion. What a great day for me and the Smith. No FTF's, no malfuctions what so ever and great accuracy. 300 rounds of different ammo( WWB, UMC, & Federal 230gr ball) which would completely blow out the 10 ring at 15yds on the standard B-27-B target. Out of 300 rounds, I dropped 3 in the 9 ring and none in the 8 ring from 7 and 15 yards. I used three different magazines. The S&W, Wilson, and a couple of old Colt mags all worked great. The really funny part is that all 3 brands of ammo shot to almost the exact same POI. I never touched the rear sight all day! All in all, I am pretty happy after being somewhat frustrated with problems when I first got it. I am going to change the grips though. They are a little too course for my liking.

    Custom 1911

Is that the same Marvel that makes the best .22 conversion kits for 1911's?
  9. I love the AR's. Soft shooting, accurate, easily serviced. Match ammo is pretty cheap compared to the others. Now, you can have thousands of different options to fit your need.
  10. The other day, I spilled 10 lbs of 9's all over the floor when I was filling the shot tube and the bag slipped out of my hands. I cleaned out my vacuum hopper and was able to recover about 3/4's of it. What a royal PITA. Still finding shot near and around my workbench.
  11. I use the standard vis stuff. Even though the temps do drop here in Stockton to the mid-40's, it's always worked good for me. Even in the high heat of summer(95+), it stays put with little or no migration. Great stuff.
  12. I have used all kinds of stuff on my autoloaders. Anything from Mobil 1 5-40 to Hoppes gun oil. The best stuff IMHO, is Brian Enos's Slide Glide. I have used it on my Glocks, 1911's, Sig's, Smith's and FN's. Try it, you will like it!
  13. I have 4 Mec 8567's (grabber) and love them. Each machine needs to be fine tuned but they are pretty goof proof. Everyone that I shoot with that has a hydraulic 9000 can reload faster, but certainly not better. I can load 600 .410's in about 2.5 hours, which can't compare to the 9000 guys. When these wear out, my next machine will be a Spolar.
  14. If you actually shoot the target and drop out the center, no. It's usually damaged beyond repair. I don't know if they pick up the used targets, but I think they do to use for practice. Only new targets are used for registered shoots. Most use 3 3/4 dram 7.5's I don't remember if they are 1 1/8 or 1 1/4oz loads. 1350 - 1400fps sounds about right.
  15. This depends on many factors. This size and shape of the wad along with the length of the case and the powder charge can all contribute to shot leaving the wad during it's dwell time in the barrel. Wad pressure can also be a factor. The way the case is crimped also can cause this. Using a wad designed for 1oz loads and dropping 1.125oz of shot will cause this also. When reloading for my skeet shooting, I am positive that some shot make cotact with the barrel. I don't worry about it because I shoot lead shot only. 8.5 & 9's. My K-80's barrel is chrome lined which is much harder than lead. Even in my Briley sub-gauge tubes which have ti. chambers and aluminum bores this isn't a problem. I will not use reclaimed shot in these because the quality varies so much. Now steel shot is another matter. I have never had to load steel and hope and prey I never have to.
  16. This can happen if the installed choke was loose. Some people hand tighten thier extended chokes and forget to keep tightening them. If allowed to shoot loose, they will deform and expand. I always lube them up and use a tool to tighten them. The sporting clays guys usually don't do this because they are changing chokes after every station. I have even seen Dewalt drills used for changing chokes! If you keep them lubed and tight, they will be good for a very long time. Briley recommends taking them out and cleaning them at least once a month with heavy use.
  17. A typical shoot is 30 targets. The cost of each target is about 6 dollars. Ammo used is high velocity 7.5's. Most guns are O/U's. This game tries to simulate live Pigeons. A lot of money can be made "on the side" in this game.
  18. If your gun has screw in chokes, you might want to try a different one to see if it makes a difference.
  19. My favorite is a Bill Davis 686 S&W I had built back in the eighties for PPC matches. The trigger is so smooth in DA that it's better than most revolvers in SA mode. It's been a long time since I have taken it out and put a few round throgh it. Maybe this weekend...........
  20. I use the Hodgdon online manual sometimes but I really use the Sierra manual the most.

    Newby

New member here. What a great beginning! I have been a shooter all my adult life and have cycled through most of the shooting sports. Trap, Skeet, Benchrest, Sporting Clays, PPC, Bullseye just to name a few. I now spend most of my time shooting Skeet. I just became a Life Member of the NSSA. Here in Stockton, we are blessed with one of the best Skeet fields around and some very top notch shooters are members. We also have Trap, 5 Stand, Helice and Sporting Clays. My newest toy is an Anschutz .17HMR 1517MPR. Can't wait to use some of my old benchrest equipment again and have some fun!
  22. I use the Remington heating rod and the Remmy dehumidifier in both my safes. I have to plug in my dehumidifier once a month with the safe in the garage and every 3 months with the one in the house. So far---so good.
  23. Graco makes weighted end caps. They are called the Graco BreakO. 870 and 1100's use the same endcap except for some of the newer 1100's.

    S&W gunsmithing

The great thing about S&W is their lifetime warranty. The problems you discribe will probably be covered. Contact S&W, explain your problems and they will probably pay for the work along with the shipping both ways. They have great customer service, which wasn't always the case.
