  1. I've been really struggling at the trap range with my 870. Now keep in mind that I have changed from shooting with one eye to shooting with two, the forearm and butt stock, hold points, etc. One of my shooting buddies suggested I pattern the gun to see where it's really shooting. We put up a large piece of cardboard with several black dots drawn on, paced off 10 steps and look what we found!

We did move the comb to the right and up a bit to bring the patter center/high. Sure makes it much easier to break targets when your back at 27 yards!

  2. I usually wear plugs except when I am hunting and then I don't wear anything. blush That is likely the reason I've lost 25% hearing in my left ear.

Have you tried the 'combat' earplugs? They have an adjustable hole in the center of the earplug. You can still hear conversations, but they do a pretty good job of reducing the pressure wave from muzzle blast. I've studied them and am pretty sure it has something to do with the length of the small hole in the center of the ear plug. I just don't know enough about the physics of sound to know for sure.

  3. I bought a new Ruger Single Six in chambered in .22LR. The very first time I shot the revolver, I had problems getting the cartridges all the way into the cylinder. I have big strong hands and I couldn't push the shell all the all the way unless I used a small wooden dowel I carry in my shooting box. I thoroughly cleaned the cylinder and noticed that I could see tool marks in the throats. I called Ruger and explained the problem and what was clearly tool marks in the throats. The support representative said that it just wasn't possible that I got a cylinder that had throats that weren't polished. I sent it in to be inspected and if need-be they said they would fix whatever was wrong. When the revolver came back the cylinder throats were as polished as could be and I've never had a problem loading since. I was a bit disappointed in the initial quality, but I'm happy that they made everything right.

  4. A couple years ago I was having trouble with noticeably inconsistent 45ACP reloads. I use Hodgdon Clays, so I gave Hodgdon a call and told them the problem I was having. The very first questions from the gentleman who answered the phone was, "Are you using anything in the tumbler to shine the brass?" I said yes that I was using Brasso. He said that the propellant will absorb enough oil from the left over Brasso that it will affect the burn rate/consistency. I stopped using the Brasso and my loads are again very consistent.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

  5. Arkie,

I do not have a 9000, but many at our trap club do. I think one of the best compliments of the 9000 is that several people not only have one, but two!

I have called MEC a couple times with questions about my Sizemaster and have always been delighted with their customer support.

There are also many add-ons, after market parts, etc for the whole MEC line. Probably more than any other manufacturer.

I'd personally go with the MEC.

  6. I am considering a NEF (New England Firearms) single shot rifle in .204 or .223. I would primarily use for plinking, general target practice, and possibly varmiting if I get a chance to go west someday. The price of the NEF rifles is very reasonable, but I don't know if there is a accuracy penalty for the low price. Does anyone own or have experience shooting a NEF rifle?

  7. I installed the light pull sear spring yesterday before going to the trap range. After you take the trigger group out, installing the sear spring takes about 15 seconds.

The lighter pull trigger really feels different than the stock trigger, I'd say the pull is about half what it is with the stock spring.

I can't say that it improved my scores, but it feels more natural when you don't have to pull the trigger so hard. Over time this may help gain a broken bird or two..?
