  1. Good input from all. My LGD gave me what I consider a pretty good deal on a Euro Police Sig re-manufactured P225 9mm. Comes in a box (has the cop's name on the box) with 2 mags, and also a holster. The cool thing is the dealer let me piggyback on the Ruger buy, so I only had to do the transfer paperwork, not another background check.

You're going to love the P225/P6. It's a real joy to shoot. If you saw my 629 shooting video I did at my uncle's farm over Thanksgiving, that was my cousin running the camera. We had just finished putting about 100 rounds through my P6 and he was hooked. He wants one bad.

    Check out this web site.

  2. I wonder if Browning makes anything?

I think the last time Browning actually made their own firearms was when the Browning brothers had their own shop in Ogden, UT in the mid to late 1800s. Once Browning started selling his designs to Winchester, production of their home-grown guns pretty much ceased. Then, when the arrangement with Winchester ceased at the turn of the century, Browning started licensing his designs to other gunmakers: Remington, Savage, Stevens, and FN. Only his agreement with FN provided for a gun (the Auto-5) to be marked as a "Browning." (This briefly changed during WWII when Remington assumed production of the Browning marked Auto-5 since Liege was occupied by the Nazis.) After WWII, Browning marked guns continued to be produced by FN and Miroku in Japan.

  3. I saw the auction on Gunbroker with a .45 and the scaled down .22. I wonder who is actually making it for them, since Browning doesn't make many of their own guns (if any?).

I would have rather seen it in original form (pre A1 style) but as I won't be buying one, I have little reason to say much about it.

FN still makes the Hi-Power so I would suspect they are making this limited run of 1911s, too.

  4. GREAT THREAD

I have some 20+ year old muffs that are shot (maybe bad word choice). Basically the softparts plastic covering is all cracked and nasty.

What brand do you guys recommend?

I've got an inexpensive Remington set of muffs I got at Academy. Rated at 31 db, they do a good job--better than plugs alone.

This video showcases 00 and 000 buckshot spread. Thought it might give you a bit of an edge G-MAN to know the spread before the class even though I'm sure you have already seen it/know it. A ten inch spread at 21 feet is why the shotgun is the ultimate home defense weapon.

I agree, but I don't necessarily agree with Hickok's characterization of a shotgun at HD distances is like shooting a rifle. Even with 00 or 000 buck, the chances of you connecting with at least one projectile are far greater than if you were shooting a rifle or a handgun because you're launching multiple projectiles. With a rifle you're only launching one projectile so aim is critical--there is no margin of error.

  6. Are any of those you listed in your original post manufactured in the USA? I have been considering a Mossberg.

Remington and Mossberg. If I were seriously going to consider a Mossberg it would have to be the 590A1. This is the one the Marines use and has metal in all the places where the 500 and 590 have plastic.

  7. Did you use Ballistol?

Yes. I'd recommend anyone who gets one of these completely tear it down and clean it out. The Chinese evidently love to gob on a heavy oil as a preservative for shipping and the action was full of it. Bore was very dirty from the proof round. Inside of magazine tube was dirty.

  8. After doing a lot of soul-searching and research I've come to the conclusion (as have countless others before me) that the best home defense weapon is not a handgun but a shotgun. I'm signed up to take a 4-hour defensive shotgun class in a couple of weeks and I went shopping today for a HD shotgun. I wanted something that would be solid and dependable but not break the bank. I've been researching HD shotguns all week and had narrowed my choices down to:

    1. Browning BPS

    2. Remington 870

    2. Mossberg 500

    3. Maverick 88

    4. Savage-Stevens 350

    5. H&R Pardner Protector

I handled all of these and decided on the Pardner Protector. For $200 all-in I don't think you can beat it. It's a (licensed) 870 clone, and I've read almost nothing but positive reviews. The action was a little rough when I got it home so I took it completely down to work on it. Internally, it is an exact copy of the 870 action. Externally the receiver has a more Browning/Benelli profile. (Maybe Remington insisted on this so the gun would not be a 100% copy of the 870.) Receiver is forged steel and the internal milling looked excellent. Trigger group is aluminum, unlike the current 870 Express models that have plastic. I used 1000 grit sand paper and polished the mag tube, the slide rails, and the bolt. I removed the mag spring and follower and cleaned a load of crap out of the inside the mag tube. Got it all cleaned, lubed and put back together and she now cycles 100% more smoothly, which should improve even more after a few hundred rounds go through it.

  9. Ed, thanks for you input. Here is what I think I'm looking at: Once I visit my local shotgun club (the oldest in the state, BTW), and decide if I like the people, etc., I suspect I will start out just shooting skeet. From what I understand, it's the least expensive and requires the least "specialized" shotgun to do it effectively. I just need a good gun to get started, which means I could probably do fine by not buying anything and use my old Browning Auto-5 just to get a taste of the sport.

If I wind up getting hooked and want to move on to trap and sporting clays, etc., I can then worry about getting a more specialized shotgun.

    How does that sound?
