I'm a big 9mm fan, but one of these days I would like to step up to one of the larger calibers. Without considering the guns that are available, which caliber would you prefer from a home defense, target shooting and plinking standpoint--.40S&W or .45ACP?

Nice gun Tom. If I ever get a .40, that is what I'll get. The XD is nice but the M&P seems better executed overall.

Except for Walmart, you're right.I don't see any bare ammo shelves around here anymore. just last May/June most stores were either out or extremely short of supply.Wayne
.380 is still tough. Most places have limits. The .380 shortage must be due to lots of concealed carry weapons being sold.

I think there is a lot of hoarding going on. I am somewhat guilty myself.

I've used these before and my shooting still stinks.
I think it's little better than some of the "advice" you get from guys hanging around the range.

Witnessed the spectacle yesterday of an ammunition shipment arriving at Walmart. Poor guy wheeled out a cart piled high with ammo and was immediately swarmed. Looked like a bunch of vultures picking over a gazelle carcass. The Walmart guy looked miserable.

How about some of the smaller calibers, particularly the ones used for concealed carry? Like .380 for instance. For .380 I think a case could be made to stick with ball. I wonder if you would get adequate penetration with hollow points.

I have a box each of Federal, Winchester and Remington---550 bulk.
I'm taking the Federals and Winchesters out to try this weekend. The Remingtons have been terrible. I either works well, I'm stocking up a Walmart. Good prices.

.45 auto and .44 magnum for me. The .44 mag was pretty impressive.

I'm just amazed at the price of .22LR these days. I guess that comes from growing up with $1.00 a box ammo from the hardware store.

I do a lot of plinking with my .22 Ruger Standard. I am also cheap. Where do you find the best deals on ammo? Picked up some Federal hollow points the other day a WalMart---$17 for 550 bulk pack. I haven't used any yet. Not a bad price if they work.

Saw a Judge in the store the other day. A lot bigger than I thought they would be. I would like to shoot one just for kicks.

It's hard to believe a reputable company would put their name on this kind of stuff. I understand that they have to make ammo work in a lot of different guns. But still...will not work in a Ruger?
I've put at least 15k rounds through this gun over the years--every kind of ammo under the sun. Never seen anything like this.

.40 S&W OR .45 ACP?

Yeah, it may come down to just ammo cost. I've been studying this for a while and there really doesn't seem to be a big difference. Maybe the .40 shoots a little flatter. Maybe a bigger selection of pistols are chambered for the .45. I really don't know. Hopefully someone has a lot of experience with both and can share ideas.
Noise and flash could be a factor in home defense mode.
