I can get Tula small pistol primers for $18.50/1000, which is about $10/1000 less than the CCI primers I've been buying. Has anyone used Tula primers? I would like to try some, but don't know how well they work.

Wayne,

I do know that they are made in Russia and were once connected with Wolf ammunition. Other than that I've never known anyone to use them and never seen them for sale. Any way you could buy just one pack of 100 and try them out? Interested as to how they work for you. I'm stocked up on CCI and Federal's myself.

I've never used any.

I checked on a reloading forum where I know several people use them and found most had zero trouble, but some reported as many as four failures per 100. Maybe it depends on what lot you get.

They estimate the hardness as about even with Winchester, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The common complaint I saw was that the boxes are kinda cheesy so you might want to keep scotch tape handy to add a little security from spillage.

Hittman just shot 100 9mm loads that had the Tula small pistol primers. He reported one failure out of 100 - not bad, but not normal for the CCI primers we normally use. We'll see how the next few hundred perform.

I bought 1000 Wolf primers, I don't know if they are the same as Tula, but I've had a 2-3% FTF rate after I fixed a primer seating issue I had previously.

Hittman's failure rate so far is 0.5%, but the failure rate for CCI is very low. I think the Tula primer is fine for practice rounds, but not good for competition.
