Red Dot vs Holographic?

Can someone explain the difference between Red Dot and Holographic sights? The application I'm thinking of is for a Ruger Mark II.

Holographic has a image (usually a few dots for range and can project onto the device any thing that they want).

A Red Dot is just that. Red dot in the tube.

I've got both, a few Red Dots on my 22LR rifles and Holographics on my AR15s.

And a Red Dot unit (this is the one on my Daughters 10-22 which she loves to shoot) Red Dot sight

Should I assume that holographic scopes are generally more expensive than red dot sights?

Do either offer magnification?

Yes for the most part holographic are more $$.

And yes, you can get magnification on both. Some put the dot in a "normal" scope and others have a magnifier that flips/sits in front of the holographic/red dot unit.

I would say try out equal value of each sight and find out which one works the best for you. I tried both and one really works super for me.
