  1. Quote:is that it is all but impossible to over lubricate one. Again, the reason for this is it's direct impingement gas system. It tends to blow off much of the lubricant that is applied to the Bolt Carrier Group Yup, it blows it off inside the receiver and then allows it to collect/gather dirt, powder, and whatever else your environment has to offer.. It will also blow out and cover your glasses.. While I agree 100% these guns need to be lubed, the actual amount of lube needed for proper function is very small.. While it may not be your intention is kinda "sounds" like your recommending giving your AR an OIL Bath and this quite simply is not needed..
  2. As already mentiond there are NO M1A's through the CMP.. I would highly recomend buying as many US GI parts as possible and having the rifle assembled by a knowledgable smith.. Here's a PIC of mine.. Aside from the SADLAK spring guide all GI for the most part except the receivers (of course), barrels and a few ofmy range mags..
  3. The .44 Mag is my FAVE pistol cartridge so I've been loading the .44 for a long time.. H-110 is my most used powder and has proven itself a steller performer in many diff laodings.. I also use Unique for my 240 GR LSWC loads.. These are my "plinking" rounds but would certainly work for hunting as well.. Only thing I think worth mention that sets the .44 apart is making sure you have a good crimp when loading Full Bark ammo.. If you enjoy the 44's as much as I do reloading for them is a MUST..
  4. I'm a bit tardy but wanted to share a few PICS from last SAT's range trip.. BTW, the NEW FAL build ran GREAT!! Took these right before we left.. Rifle is not 100% just yet as I will be swapping H/G's (these are off one of my PARA's)and some other small parts to get her a bit more correct for an IZZY Build but she is close. At the range, having a lot of fun: The IZZY: FIRST three shots from the IZZY.. Shot #1 is in the 6-Ring @ 1:O'clock.. Made my sight ajustments (got lucky and nailed it), next Two shots are in the X-RING.. Guess I did OK on the barrel timing.. As I said I would, an M1 came out to play as well.. Figured it appropriate for the 4'TH of JULY weekend.. Hope ya like the PICS..
  5. I imagine not.. I shoot a LOT of .308 and even though my stash is pretty well padded I always seem to "WANT" MORE..
  6. Been tinkering some with TITEGROUP the last month or so.. I like the small charges as it certainly yields more loaded rounds per LB.. Kinda hoping this powder would be a good option and it does seem to be viable since it is pretty versitile. I like that it meters well, and does seem to work in both 9MM and .40 S&W.. I don't have an issue with smoke when using Jacketed bullets but did notice it when shooting my Lead bullets in my 9MM ammo.. At this point I'm not sure I will replace my current Old Standby (W-231) though because so far aside from the yield potential my results have not shown a significant enough improvement to justify it.. My thought is this might be an excellent powder to have in the powder stores since it is so versitile.. Gotta be something said for these small charges helping stretch the budget so to speak.. Maybe I've used the powders I like for so long I'm a bit biased but the results speak for themselves.. W-231 is a GREAT powder.. But so is WST, & Unique, heck I have also had good results with HS-6 and would not hesitate to suggest any of these powders for experimentation. My .45 ACP load consists of the H&G #68 200 GR LSWC atop a charge of W-231.. This load will consistantly shoot one ragged hole if I do my part.
  7. I know I'm digging up an old thread but ifya still have the .308 Brass and such please LMK.. Thanks, MIKE
  8. Hey Wayne~ Something to consider is yout MAX OAL in an AUTOLOADER is usually limited by the Mag.. With most bullets I doubt you could have an OAL long enough to engage the rifling and still have the round fit in the Mag. If using bullets with a cannelure and properly trimmed cases your OAL is easy to figure. I don't crimp my .223 Ammo so I'm not too concerned by the position of the cannelure and just shoot for my usual OAL. which for me is a pretty standard 2.220"-2.250" depending on bullet weight.. Stretch this OAL out to 2.260 and you can expect feeding issues because of the mag.. This is why the heavy bullets (.223 heavy) are SINGLE loaded. If your still looking for more info or data LMK, I have worked up some pretty impressive .223 data with a variety of bullets. As to your 1:9 twist I can tell you most of my AR's are 1:9 Barrels and I have had excellent luck with weights ranging from 50-75 gr. I hope your trip went well, 6K rounds should be enough to get your barrel hot that's fer sher..
  9. COOL PICS!! Thanks for sharing the Link... Loaded up and headed to the range, bringing a few toyz so it should be a LOT of fun. Post range trip data and PICS upon my return..
  10. Very familier with WECSOG, got my Diploma awhile back.. Yea the Files is a great place and there was a time Dan had some pretty amazing deals.. We also used to have some pretty sweet Group Buy's back in the day.. Your right 3 M1's should be the minimum I think, that way one can make a proper "stack" at anytime. Love the M1'S, it is a special rifle and it does so much so well.. Wonderful sights, very accurate, and of course it's overall design surely one of the greatest ever.. All this M1 talk means that I'll be bringing one for sure on SAT.. The tough part is choosing who gets to play and who has to stay home..
  11. YUP, Dan's Ammo/Sporting Goods used to have a LOT of FAL Stuff years back. Dan is great to do BIZ with so I imagine you have a nice kit. There was a time he had a ton of kits and sold them at terrific prices bacl in the day. If I was you I'd go with a COONAN for the Rhodie build.. DCI has really stepped up for the FAL guy's and is making a great product at a fair price.. I'll be sure to share the details of my fire/function test for this build but I expect no issues.. Hand cycling dummy rounds and empty cases evetything seems GTG. I also handcycled the action about 100 times so far.. Just need the gas tube pin (should be here tomorrow) then I can throw on a set of H/G's..
  12. The RHODIES are cool builds, did you get a kit with lots of paint on it? As far as I'm concerned at this point in time COONAN is the BEST option.. The One I just screwed together absolutely went perfectly.. The Barrel hand timed exactly right and torqued up spot on. Headspace was EASY as pie & the locking shoulder needed was .259".. I'm pretty stoked about this build.. COONAN is really making great receivers abd seem to have teken care if the "issues" the yhad a couple years back.. DSA is of course making receivers and they are good but most everyone is reporting that very small L/S's are needed for corect H/S.. This is not acceptable to me so when i do my IZZY H/Bar next I'll be using another COONAN since they are now making T2's. I've also built on CENTURY and to be honest had NO ISSUES with those either so IF you have one or come across one at a good price it is worth consideration..
  13. Your right of course but even though they are not all FN they all basically come from the same mind.. He was a GENIOUS no doubt and the fact that these rifles have seen pretty much constant use by 90 countries for over 50 years clearly lends testament to the original design. Thanks, yes I am smitten no doubt and have been collecting and shooting these for some time now. Just built another last week and it will see it's very first range day Sat.. In fact I also just now finished my loading for SAT.. Wanted to go back to some old data and run my H-335 load first.. YES, you DO NEED and FN49...
  14. All FN's are good and while I would have no problem owning a few of them ALL FN's are NOT FAL's.. Here's a couple you might like:
  15. Nope that load is GTG all day long.. Prolly nuthin at all, as mentioned I've gotten green stuff on the Pistons before.. Clean it off and apply a touch of lube..
  16. If you get the BLC-2 for free use it and have no worries as t's very good powder.. There was a time when BLC-2 was THE powder for the .223.. "IF" your purchasing powder for your specific needs, you would have a hard time doing better the H-335 and W-748. I do like R-15 for heavier bullets but of your sticking to the 50-65 gr weight range these powders will work very well.. I am able to use a bit LESS H-335 to achieve the same velocities I get with the W-748 and that does translate into some savings of your loading a lot..
  17. Case length affects a number of things including pressure, and crimp, as well as ammo consistency.. I always trim brass for auto loaders, and also ALWAYS Full length size. the only time I Neck Size if when loading for bolt guns. This is especially true if your loading for more then one rifle.. All my hand loaded ammo intended for the Auto's MUST function in multiple guns so Neck Sizing is not an option. Using a quality case gauge, I run each case through the gauge after sizing.. "IF" it needs trimming it gets culled and trimmed if not it gets primed and loaded. By doing it this way I'm assured that I only trim the cases that need it.. I keep several K pcs of .223 brass RTL (Ready To Load) at all times.. This brass has all been cleaned, sized/deprimed (cleaned again), trimmed if needed, and re-primed.
  18. H-335 is an Excellent powder, I have used it for years and been quite pleased with the results. I especially like it for the .223 and .308 but it works for others as well.. Another great powder for the .223 is W-748. After getting about 13 lbs of this powder for FREE, I had to find a good use for it.. It was all used up loading .223 with excellent chrono and accuracy results.. It meters like a dream too and worked with bullet weights from 50-75 grains..
  19. I shoot my AR's often and almost never clean them right away.. They get wiped down and if I think it needed the get a few drops of lube. I would not suggest running ANY-thing "Dripping" with oil.. If the oil migrates to the chamber it can cause problems.. The case is supposed to expand and grip the inside of the chamber for that split second at ignition and oil can keep it from doing that. This can have a neg affect on the gas systems operation and allow greater forces to be applied to the bolt then normal. Proper lube on most guns is actually pretty minimal, in some cases (GLOCK for example) recommended lube is no more then a few drops in the correct places. I usually go several hundred rounds (or more) before I disassemble the Bolts in my guns.. As mentioned above many guns are "over-cleaned".. Not to say cleaning is not required as I assure you I am meticulous in their care and maintenance but I do try to keep it practical..
  20. I would be interested in what type of ammo you were shooting, might it have been WOLF? The ammo may not have been corrosive per se as I have noted some greenish grud on the gas piston of my FAL's after shooting S/A Ball for example. In your case it may have just been some dirty stuff.. If there was no rust noted I'd say your GTG.. Clean, lube and put it back in the safe.. Modern ammo loaded (or hand-loaded) with smokeless powders do not need to be cleaned right away.. Even living in FL I usually don't clean anything right away "except" guns fired with corrosive ammo.. These are usually Bolt Gun, although I do fire some corrosive ammo in my AK's, and some other auto loaders. If I plan on shooting a specific rifle/s in the next couple weeks I just wipe it down good and put it away.. Once I'm done with that particular piece fora bit it gets thoroughly cleaned and lubed than put away..
  21. Not new to Forums or Firearms by any stretch but I am NEW here. Figured I'd register and maybe join the festivities. I live in Florida and shoot quite a bit.. My general firearms experience is pretty broad but I do have an affinity for Military Small Arms.. In case my Moniker doesn't hint enough I am particularly fond of the FN FAL. I reload for most all my rifle & pistol calibers including shot shells in both 20ga & 12ga.. Been reloading for many years and find it to be a great pastime as well as money saver. Always to willing learn new things, and palaver with like minded folk.. If I can share anything at all with other posters I'll be sure to do so...
